Massage hot stone massage stone

The hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage. Smooth stones and heated plates are placed on key points of the body. The therapist may also hold the stones and use them to massage certain areas.

History

The use of hot stones to cure dates back to ancient times, but it was not until Mary Nelson Hannigan, therapist in Arizona, and his technique of hot stone massage, called LaStone therapy, the use of stones hot for massage has spread.

This massage, yet simple to learn and intuitive by nature difficult to monitor by listening, understanding and perception of the anatomy requires it, is an art to discover and develop!

Mary Nelson Hannigan runs workshops to train other massage therapists in his techniques. While LaStone continues to be popular, other therapists and spas and spas have developed their own versions of hot stone massage, using a heated smooth rock.

Principle
The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of black volcanic rock rich in iron that absorbs and retains heat.

River rocks are normally used because they have been smoothed by time and current.

The stones are immersed in water and then heated in an electric heater until it reaches a certain temperature (between 54 and 63 ° C). The stones can be placed on specific points on the back, on the palms of the hand, or between the toes.

The heat warms and relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to apply deeper pressure, if necessary.

The heat from the stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system.

Some therapists place stones on points that are said to represent the body's energy centers to balance both the body and mind.

Convenient
The stones are never rough. They are always flat and smooth. The stones used on the back are the size of a large egg but flat.

Stones are heated by an electric heating device with digital reading or adjustable thermostat.

The massage therapist always holds the stones before putting in contact with the body, which ensures a good temperature. However, each with its own tolerance, do not hesitate to tell if the stones are too hot.

Cool marble stones are occasionally used during a treatment, especially if there is inflammation.

The therapist often begins by applying oil on the body, allowing the stones to slide smoothly along the muscles. You are lying on his stomach and then the therapist usually uses hot stones to massage the back.

Once the muscles relaxed by the hot stones, the therapist can remove and use his hands to directly massage the skin.

The stones can then be placed again on the body during a short period.

You will be prompted to turn on your back. The therapist may place small stones between your toes or in the palm of your hand and continue the session.

A typical hot stone massage lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

Benefits, limitations, against-indications

Many people feel the warmth of the stones as a relief. The hot stone massage is suitable for people who feel chilly or who have cold feet. It is also indicated for people who suffer from tension in the muscles but prefer a lighter massage. The heat relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using deep pressure too.
